Allen Costa, MD, is a fellowship-trained ophthalmologist at Alexandria Ophthalmic Associates who specializes in refractive surgery and advanced vision correction. He completed a prestigious refractive surgery fellowship at Kugler Vision, where he received advanced training in LASIK, PRK, Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), and modern refractive cataract surgery techniques.
Dr. Costa earned his medical degree from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he served as a class officer throughout medical school and as president of the American Medical Association student chapter. Upon graduation, he received the Alumni Award in recognition of his leadership, service, and dedication to his classmates.
He completed his ophthalmology residency at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, the nation’s largest ophthalmology residency program and America’s first specialty hospital.
Prior to medical school, Dr. Costa graduated from Emory University with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a minor in Portuguese. He studied abroad in both Spain and Brazil, becoming fluent in Spanish and developing proficiency in Portuguese. He later worked in biomedical research in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School before pursuing his medical career.
Dr. Costa’s passion for ophthalmology began through his volunteer work with Unite for Sight, where he witnessed firsthand the life-changing impact that restoring vision can have on patients around the world. That experience inspired him to pursue refractive surgery, allowing him to combine cutting-edge technology with compassionate, patient-centered care.
He believes vision correction is one of the most transformative elective procedures available, helping patients experience greater freedom and improved quality of life every day. Dr. Costa is committed to guiding each patient through the process with empathy, education, and individualized treatment recommendations.
